On Top of
the green hills of Matraia, in Lucca country side, there is little
hamlet, with 3 independent houses, which share the common paved
area. In the old days this area was used by the farming people
for farming work.
Casa NOCE is a section of larger and older building dating back
to 1300.
Stone walls reflect the old way of building houses in the past-
The houses were made with stone which were to be found on the place,
as it was cheap and easy. Thick stone walls were ment to keep the
warmth of the fire place inside the house, during cold winter time.
It was usual to have a big wood oven to bake bread for the families
of the hamlet and from the village- the quantity of the bread was
for one week supply .People used to bring wood for fire and flour
for the bread, and they paid the use of the oven leaving a whole
bread to the owner of the oven.
A large pergola, in front of the house, welcome the guests for
dining out with fantastic view on the valley.
Casa UVA was the old stable with the barn where the farmers used
to storage the hay. Also this house has been built with stone walls
and wood beans on the roof.
On the terraced area garden , on the back of the house, there is
a very nice area, with pergola, for dining out al fresco.
In the past years these buildings have been used in different ways:
as houses for farming people, later as a house for nuns (there
is a convent nearby) and then as a kindergarden for the children
of the village.
The present owners restored the hamlet with great care and love
for any details.
The owner is an architect and he knows very wall what to do to
keep the atmosphere of passed by time.
The hamlet is perched on the green hills in the village of Matraia,
not far from Lucca.
A beautiful, good, very panoramic winding up road brings you up
to the hamlet overlooking the valley down as far as Lucca.
The owners live permanently in the third house of the hamlet; they
are a nice couple, always ready to make the holidays of their guests,
very pleasant.
The architect is very expert of cooking; upon request he can prepare
very good dinners with typical Tuscan recipes and, pizza party,
baking pizzas in the wood oven.
Useless to say that the restaurant was immediately a great success.
