La Scassatina
is a luxurious villa, available for holiday rentals in the Lucca
hills east of Lucca and west of Florence. It is less than an hour
by train, bus or car from Florence and 40 minutes from Pisa International
Airport. It is just 20 minutes by car from the villa to the ancient
walled city of Lucca, in northern Tuscany. In little over an hour
you can find yourself exploring the marble caves at Carrara, the
elegant shops of the seaside Forte di Marmi, the delights of the
fishing villages of the Cinque Terre and the Italian Riviera, or
the divine wines of Chianti. In winter, the ski slopes of the resort
of Abetone are an hour away. Sleeping
In the main house are three private and luxurious ensuite bedrooms
accommodating up to 6 people. Rented in conjunction with the apartment
which sleeps two, which has its own entrance and outdoor terrace,
the villa accommodates eight in total.
One bedroom has a queen-sized bed, the other two bedrooms each
have wide, comfortable twin beds. All bedrooms have exquisite antique
wardrobes, ample storage space and wonderful views over the Lucchese
countryside.
The villa is furnished with rustic Tuscan antique furniture combined
with all modern conveniences, including satellite TV, stereo system,
phone/fax and computer connections There is gas-fired convection
heating in all rooms of both house and apartment, for pleasant
stays during the festive autumn and winter months. All windows
are double-glazed and shuttered, keeping the house cool in summer
and warm in winter.
The dining/living room has a music system, an open fire, indoor
games and a small library of books for holiday reading. There are
guides and maps of the surrounding areas, of famous villas, gardens
and other attractions - and an English/Italian dictionary! There
is a detailed Information booklet for the villa provided to all
guests prior to occupancy, which includes detailed information
of the facilities of the villa, of local activities and contacts,
local and regional trattorias and restaurants.
The first floor has all three bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms, and
a short flight of stairs leads up to what was the old barn, now
an open plan living room with a desk for writing or computer work.
It overlooks a valley of olive groves and up to the village church
on the hill above the villa. There is a double-sided fireplace
separating the writing area from the main living space, which has
games, large TV, video player and some english videos and beautiful
Tuscan settees. A wooden monastery door leads onto the top terracotta
terrace with its outdoor dining table and chairs, grassed garden
surrounded by olive grove and yet another great view. The villa is built on 3 levels. The front terrace leads to the
dining/living room, gourmet kitchen, and guest bathroom. There
is an automatic washing machine in the side galley, which leads
to a marble outside sink and herb garden. The country-style kitchen
is equipped with Smeg appliances, a substantial stainless steel
fridge/freezer, a gas hob, large electric oven, microwave oven
and dishwasher. It has a table for four and a corner fireplace
for cooking on the coals, Tuscan style. The elegantly furnished
dining room has a rustic antique dining table to seat 8 people.
There is a sitting area with open fireplace, stereo system and
tourist reference literature and maps. The self-contained apartment
accommodates two people, providing for a total of 8 people in conjunction
with the main part of the villa. It occupies the original wine
cellar and has its own separate entrance from the side herb garden.
The apartment features a typical Tuscan-style kitchen cum living
room, separate dressing room and a fully appointed bathroom.
It has a bedroom with two comfortable single beds and its own
satellite TV and video player. Its outdoor dining terrace overlooks
the valley to the chestnut forest covered hills above, and traps
full morning sun.
The apartment is beautifully cool in summer and the convection
central heating in each room ensures cosy and comfortable winter
accommodation
It may be reserved during the season for the occassional use
by the owners and may be rented separately for two during the
low-season
The 1.2 m deep swimming pool enjoys day-long sunshine and panoramic
views from the surrounding grassed terrace. There are sun loungers,
a Tuscan sun pergola and an ancient mill-stone table with chairs
for casual poolside snacks. Underwater and garden-lighting invite
evening swimming, after a gourmet meal on the front top terrace,
cooked by our own Tuscan chef.
Outdoor dining and lounging is easy, with separate terraces at
the front, the side, the rear or around the swimming pool. The
wood fired pizza oven and barbeque are to the side of the front
terrace for al fresco cooking and dining.
Winter Living
Villa La Scassatina is perfect for day trips to the snow fields
of Abetone, attending the wonderful autumnal and winter time
music concerts in the villages, seeing the grapes picked during
the September Vendemmia, watching the olive harvest or just
for enjoying the walks through the nearby valley and chestnut
forest.
